19 Things That Almost Completely Changed Game Of Thrones

13. Arise, King Jaime

Jaime Lannister Gif Jaime started out as a far darker character than he seems now: his first major act of course was to attempt to kill Bran Stark (which will presumably come back to haunt him in some way), but since then he has blossomed into one of the more complex - and perverely likable - characters in the series. How could anyone have thought that he would be the subject of such a compelling romantic story as his dynamic with Brienne? In the original plans though, Jaime was going to be bad to the bone, killing off every surviving heir to the Iron Throne and sitting on it himself and framing Tyrion for all of the murders. Was It A Good Change? Jaime is far more interesting as a protector of kings, rather than a king himself - especially given his haunted past - and his affection for Tyrion is a key part of what makes him such an intriguing figure, in contrast to his sister's malice. Though he more rarely shows it, there's every sense that Jaime is an instrument of war, and while it would have been arresting to see him cut a blood tide through the surviving heirs, he sells better as a fractured human, rather than a monster. Presumably his uneasy alliance with his brother will change in the show now that he feels the sharp pangs of guilt at not protecting his father.
