12. Godless

This western drama series from Logan co-writer Scott Frank and executive producer Steven Soderbergh does require a certain viewer patience, but for those prepared to stick around for the long haul, there are rewards-a-plenty in this stylish, superbly acted 7-part mini-series.

Jeff Daniels and Jack O'Connell may deliver the most singularly striking performances, but what truly sets Godless apart from other western shows and movies is the predominantly female ensemble, transpiring as the show does in a town largely robbed of its male residents following a mining accident.

Never flinching away from the violence that defines the Old West while shooting it through a lens very much its own, Godless may have benefited from trimming a little fat here and there, but true to the genre's roots, it's in no rush to tell its story, and generally all the more engrossing as a result.
