20 Best Anime TV Series Of All Time
2. FLCL
At the time of its release back in 2001 FLCL otherwise known as Fooly Cooly, was met with a mixed reaction from anime fans. The reason why becomes clear when you begin the first episode and realise that this is going to be a very, very strange experience.
FLCL certainly is more than a little bonkers, but get used to the rapid pace and unusual plot and it soon becomes clear that this is a piece of work which was way ahead of its time. A parody/love letter to anime of all kinds (although mech and shonen dominates), pop culture nods are made with a real sense of humour as young boy Naota comes to terms with his ability to spew giant robots from out of his forehead.
The animation is ultra-stylish, and if there's anything about FLCL to complain about it's that it's only six episodes long. That may change in the future - in 2015 Gainax sold the rights to Production I.G.
