20 Best British TV Comedy Characters Of All Time
17. Marcella - GameFace
GameFace may have been eclipsed by other Channel 4 projects but it was one of the freshest, most heartfelt sitcoms of the past decade because it was relatable and a great representation of the Millennial generation (without being insulting about it).
The focus is on Marcella, written and portrayed by Roisin Conaty, a 30-something aspiring actress who is working her way through dull temping jobs and undignified acting roles in order to pursue her career. She’s got every personal problem imaginable with a dysfunctional family, crippling debt and heartbreak after splitting up with her boyfriend of 12 years. She’s sarcastic, easy going, a bit awkward and fun-loving.
The show has a clever way of bringing light to the topics of depression and unhappiness. Marcella often finds herself the victim of misunderstandings and encountering dodgy characters which leads to embarrassment. Nevertheless, she always ends up OK and moves on to the next chapter of life. As an audience, we can identify with Marcella because Conaty brought so much realism and poignancy to the lead character as someone you could laugh at whilst truly relating to them.
