20 Best British TV Comedy Characters Of All Time
18. Mike Watt - Spaced
Before the Cornetto trilogy, there was Spaced. Written by and starring Simon Pegg, it ticks all the boxes of a typical modern British sitcom – set in London, lack of canned laughter, subtle humour, interactive filming techniques and often involving some farcical situations. It was ahead of its time.
Specifically, it focused on Daisy Steiner and Tim Bisley, both freelance workers who spontaneously rent a flat together under the guise of being a couple, even though they'd only just met recently in a café. They develop a genuine friendship with hints of romance to it.
Despite only being a secondary character within the narrative, it’s Nick Frost who steals the show every time as Tim’s best friend Mike Watt. Having a much more optimistic, care-free approach to life than his buddy, Tim aspires to join the British army but due to a sustained injury during his childhood, he must settle for The Army Reserve instead. The strong bromance between the two sometimes eclipses Daisy and vice versa, Mike is often the awkward third wheel between her and Tim. He often goes through life in his own little bubble but his presence just added something more to the cult classic Spaced.
