After the thunderous ending to the previous episode, Witness, Sunk Costs finds Jimmy in police custody after breaking into Chuck's house and berating him in front of Howard. Meanwhile, Mike finally meets Gus Fring.

Sunk Costs is an episode of effective and simple fan service, giving audiences a glimpse at just how well Chuck knows the real Jimmy, and shedding some light on how Gus and Mike met -- by plotting against Hector Salamanca, a man who has wronged them both and sent them on an obsessive crusade for revenge.

More than anything, this early season three entry exemplifies the competence of Better Call Saul's writing, showing off its ability to balance numerous subplots and make each of them equally easy to become invested in.

A major turning point for both Jimmy and Mike, Sunk Costs is one of the defining episodes of Saul's run, backing every character into a corner and teasing some breath-taking confrontations that will change everyone involved forever.
