20 Best Episodes Of Better Call Saul

17. Smoke (Season 4, Episode 1)

Better Call Saul
Netflix

Smoke, like almost every season opener, starts with a look into the life of Gene Takovic, who this time round thinks his secrets may be exposed after he faints and lands in hospital. It's an uncomfortable start to an episode of constant close calls.

Following the death of Chuck, everything has changed. Howard is sure his friend died because of him, and when he spills his guts to Jimmy all he gets is a blunt shutdown from the one man who could have given him peace. Elsewhere, Nacho tries to cover up how he caused Hector's paralysing stroke.

For Jimmy, Smoke is all about shifting the blame, refusing to concede he led Chuck to his death. He covers up his true feelings -- whatever they are is never explicitly stated, adding to the episode's air of uncertainty -- and adopts an upbeat demeaner that buries his conscience.

In many ways, this is the coldest Jimmy would ever become, and perfectly exemplifies how important Chuck was to him, whether they liked each other or not.
