20 Best Superman TV Episodes Of All Time

One of the best parts of Superman: The Animated Series was how it combined a self-contained, episodic format with a sense of very real continuity. Events that happened in previous episodes were often carried over into later ones, while a few of them even played heavily into the show's overarching Fourth World storyline.

Which brings us to "Action Figures", an episode that continues off from the events of "The Way of All Flesh", which left supervillain Metallo at the bottom of the ocean. Voiced by the wonderful Malcom McDowell, we now meet Metallo as he emerges from the depths with no memory and his artificial skin gone. Only the machine remains now.

What follows is a fascinating look at a villain given a second chance, as Metallo finds himself becoming something of a hero on an island doomed to an active volcano. As more of Metallo's memories return, he returns to his dastardly, vengeful ways and confronts Superman in one of the series' most brilliant episodes.
