20 Best TV Comedy Shows Of The 21st Century

11. The Mindy Project

The Office
NBCUniversal TV

Possibly the sweetest entry on this list, since it’s essentially a Nora Ephron rom com packaged as a workplace sitcom, this sharp and witty series from The Office writer Mindy Kaling is no vanity project despite the title.

Focusing on a deeply flawed and deeply funny young doctor looking for love, the show follows her on-and-off fling with irresistibly charming straight man Chris Messina, whose taciturn self-serious gruffness contrasts perfectly with the eponymous star’s featherlight histrionics.

It’s a subversive, surprising spin on rom com tropes which succeeds by balancing smarts and heart as our stoic hero and flighty heroine turn out to be more sensitive and resilient, respectively, than expected—though the brilliant supporting cast doesn't hurt its appeal either.
