It would've been very difficult for The Assassination of Gianni Versace to live up to the heights of the first run of American Crime Story, the engrossing The People v O.J. Simpson. But to its credit, it doesn't even try to compete.

It doesn't go for the same level of intricate detail, but instead goes for a glitzier approach mixed with a look at the serious issues plaguing America at the time, which is best demonstrated in its opening, shocking episode.

Directed with real pizzaz by Ryan Murphy, The Man Who Would Be Vogue is an energetic, beautifully shot episode that nicely shifts its focus between the titular character and the real focus of the season, serial killer Andrew Cunanan.

It's an episode that sets up the bigger themes of the season, most specifically the lens it puts not just on Cunanan but his sexuality and homophobia in America during the era. It's one that will hook you into coming back for more, especially with its stunner of a climax, but could even be watched as a standalone TV movie.
