After three seasons of careful storytelling and character work, which built to an end that contained notes of hope and devastation, BoJack Horseman Season 4 tries to do things a little differently.

After the Season 3 finale, BoJack spends time separated from many of the main players, who each discover their own sense of selves without him in their lives, and for his part, BoJack is forced to again face up to whether people are better off without him, while journeying back to his childhood as well.

It makes for a season that is as surprising, poignant, and bittersweet as any in the show's run so far. There's a lot of humour to be found still, with the show once again proving it has one of the most solid grasps on finding a funny outlook on a myriad of serious topics, but a hell of a lot of pathos as well.

It played around with time this year to wonderful effect, mostly seen in the eleventh episode, Time's Arrow, which will ruin anyone with a heart. It's silly and satirical, with strong messages on a range of topics - from mental health to gun control (thoughts and prayers) - and displays a real maturity to go with it, perfectly balancing its tone and creating something both wholly enjoyable and soul destroying.
