20 Best TV Shows Of 2017
16. Catastrophe
Catastrophe is billed as a sitcom and, while it is outrageously funny, it deserves to be called a drama as much as anything else.
That was more the case in Season 3 than either of the other two (brilliant) runs of the show, which included stories of alcoholism and parental death. At the heart of these issues were Rob and Sharon, with creators Delaney and Horgan giving moving performances that drew on their own personal experiences, and once again showcased their great chemistry too.
It was helped by one final appearance from the late Carrie Fisher, another example of her rare wit, but the whole season is full of sharp humour and real pathos, with some surprising (and dark) turns that mean it's as likely to make you cry as it is laugh.
There aren't many TV shows to have portrayed an adult relationship in such clear, agonising, and yet loving detail as this, and Catastrophe manages it while utilising the gross-out comedy that made it so popular in the first place.
