Starz

Although it's based on Neil Gaiman's excellent novel, Starz's American Gods is very much a Bryan Fuller show. With its bold colour palettes that dominate the scene, its macabre designs and horror influences, and the abstract storytelling, it fits right into the Fullerverse.

It's a dazzling adaptation of the book, which remains faithful to the source material in a lot of ways and maintains a similar tone, while adding extra trippiness to the American road trip against the backdrop of a brewing war between the old Gods and the new.

It also accomplishes the difficult feat of adding new material to Gaiman's work, most notably in the fleshed out role of Laura Moon (Emily Browning), which sees a dead wife before the show's beating heart.

It almost goes without saying that it looks absolutely stunning, and yes, it's incredibly weird and graphic. But underneath all those trappings is a relevant story about America, the power of belief, and the importance of immigration, all of which is accompanied by some excellent performances from the likes of Ian McShane (in ridiculously perfect casting) and Ricky Whittle.
