20 Best TV Shows Of 2019

17. Pose

The Boys Homelander Queen Maeve
FX

Pose is a fiercely intelligent show which wears its identity on its sleeve, masks its pain in beautiful garlands and is overtly aware of its position in the political landscape even as it laughs the suggestion off. In other words, it’s drag, honey.

Set in 1980s New York City, it manages to perfectly capture the opulent glamour of that time along with dirt and the hardships. Set against the backdrop of HIV, Pose tells wounding stories with a smile.

Billy Porter continues to steal every scene, and while you might come for the balls and the costumes, you’ll stay for the drama and the characters. There’s so much going on under the surface with Pose, yet it glides across the water as smooth and graceful as ever.

Ensemble drama done right, Pose might be set in the past, but it’s a show very much of the now.
