20 Best TV Shows Of 2019

14. The Umbrella Academy

The Boys Homelander Queen Maeve
Netflix

Anyone who had read The Umbrella Academy previously would have been right to be wary about the Netflix adaption. The comic seemed entirely too weird to work on the screen, but the TV show managed to get the aesthetic perfect without sacrificing too much.

It would be unfair to say the show was carried by Ellen Page and Robert Sheehan, but at the same time it would do a disservice to their fantastic performances not to single them out.

Though it was a show very much about dynamics, Sheehan & Page shone, with their arcs heading in opposite directions. Sheehan’s Klaus started the show as a drug addicted clown and experienced a real growth in maturity, while Page’s Vanya began as withdrawn, nervous and naive before bursting out into a powerful being.

The stage is set for even higher stakes in Season Two, with the potential for the rogue Lincoln Monument from the comics to appear.
