Many people, myself included, went into House of the Dragon with low expectations -- or at least with the stubborn idea that they weren't going to be won over by a franchise that let everyone down with the controversial final season of Game of Thrones.

But it's impossible not to be gripped by this epic prequel series, which charts the rise and bloody fall of House Targaryen centuries before its descendant Daenerys waged a war that would tear the world apart. Visually stunning and rife with rich character, it feels like an extension of Game of Thrones and very much its own unique vision.

Moving through the years with thrilling intensity and countless twists, each more shocking than the last, House of the Dragon utilises a great cast (with Olivia Cooke, Emma D'Arcy and Paddy Considine as standouts) to create a gripping saga of betrayal and power; a story that feels like it's just getting started.
