Doctor Who spent the majority of the past season teasing the return of the Doctor's granddaughter. However, Susan's return was a red herring to distract from the true identity of Susan Triad, and her connection to Sutekh. But is that really it?
Referencing Susan in such a big way throughout the season makes it hard to put that genie back in the bottle. The Doctor's regret over losing touch with Susan at the end of Empire of Death feels like the setup for a future arc, but is RTD just playing with us again?
Whatever Russell's intention, Susan's return feels inevitable now, whether she's played by Carole Ann Ford or someone else. The Doctor is now more in tune with notions of family – so his own family deserves a call.
