20 Easter Eggs You Didn't Notice In American Horror Story

20. Coven Invokes Bewitched

The third season of American Horror Story riffs on the long, storied and often tragic history of witchcraft in the United States. There's room for references to the Salem Witch Trials, the voodoo magic of the local Louisiana population, but there was also a very brief and slightly obscure nod to a much less terrifying kind of magic user. Jessica Lagne's Fiona, the Supreme Witch of the Salem Coven, says in the episode €œThe Sacred Taking€ that she's €œstarting to look less Samantha and more Endora every day.€ That's a reference to Bewitched, the cheesy sixties sitcom (remade as a God-awful film with Will Ferrel and Nicole Kidman) about a domesticated witch who marries a mortal man. Much to the chagrin of her mother Endora, a meddling older witch who disapproves of her daughter Samantha marrying the schlubby Darrin Stephens. The show is best remembered for its surreal, silly interludes where Samantha is called upon to cast a spell by her witchy pals €“ which she does by wiggling her nose. Not very Coven-like at all.
