20 Funniest Moments In British Comedy

5. The Car - Fawlty Towers

The Show: The fates of the Monty Python lads were as interesting and they were varied, but arguably none of them managed to cement themselves a personal comedic legacy quite like John Cleese. Taking both writing and lead acting credits, Faulty Towers showcased him at his unhinged best, as he set about running a hotel based in Torquay - or, the "English riviera" as it was ironically labelled at the time. The setting was mundane, but the guests in the hotel, as well as his staff, made every episode a work of brilliance.

The Setup: After refusing to take his problematic car to the garage, Basil is the victim of a breakdown at the most inopportune of moments. The despair and anguish would have been underplayed by any other actor, but Cleese lets loose in a way only he can, and everyone else could relate to.
