20 Greatest Arrowverse Villains
14. Reign
A Kryptonian twist on the classic Jekyll & Hyde trope, Reign is a Worldkiller: a genetically engineered creature enhanced by dark magic and twinned with an innocent personality, Sam Arias, constantly fighting against the malign influence within her.
Essentially a Supergirl made by witches to destroy worlds (how badass does that sound?), Reign pulverises the Girl Of Steel in their first meeting. If anything, she’s stronger than Kara with fewer weaknesses.
As an antagonist, Reign is compelling and powerful, and Odette Annable does her usual sterling job portraying her twin, conflicted halves. She’s got allies, too: not only the witches that created her, but two other Worldkillers, Purity and Pestilence, each almost as powerful as her, making up a trinity of sorts.
She’s a fantastic villain, let down by some questionable storytelling choices. Why take out her two partners so quickly? Why split Sam and Reign in two at the end and remove any dramatic tension built up over the fate of the innocent persona, tied to the evil one? By the season finale, Reign felt more like a missed opportunity.
