20 Most Important TV Deaths This Decade

18. Jack Shephard - Lost (Season 6, Episode 18)

Fans of JJ Abrams' famously enigmatic TV show had to put up with a lot of silliness in the series finale (seriously, a cork!?), but one of the more affecting moments was the demise of series protagonist Jack Shephard (Matthew Fox) after saving the island from total destruction with use of said cork. His death scene is intercut with the mysterious, much discussed scene set in a church, as the Island's various inhabitants reunite and recall their time on the island. The final moments of the episode see a wounded Jack ending up back in the bamboo grove where he began the show, with dog Vincent by his side, before ultimately expiring from his wounds. Whether you bought the ending of Lost or not, it was a landmark moment from probably the most talked about and scrutinised TV show of the last decade. The interpretative elements of the finale may not have been to all tastes, but Jack saving the island and dying was certainly an emotional high-point and fitting exclamation mark for everything that came before.
