19. Zoe Barnes - House Of Cards (Season 2, Episode 1)

Without question the most absurdly unexpected death in recent TV history, season two of Netflix's acclaimed political drama House of Cards got off to a mind-blowing start when intrepid investigate reporter Zoe Barnes (Kate Mara) was hurled in front of a metro train by slimy political climber Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey). Underwood shocked us all when he murdered troubled congressman Pete Russo near the end of season one, while Zoe and her fellow reporters quickly caught a whiff that something wasn't quite right, and Frank may have been involved. Zoe's death completely altered the expected path of season two, as her friends and colleagues attempted to get to the bottom of her death, though ultimately appeared to abandon the thread out of fear that they would be next on the chopping block. It also made it abundantly clear, if it wasn't already, that Frank's boundless ambition would lead him to do truly deplorable things, as though staging the suicide of an alcoholic wasn't bad enough...
