18. The Twelfth Doctor Could Have Been The Eighth Doctor
Peter Capaldi was invited to audition for the role of the Eighth Doctor in 1995, which ultimately went to Paul McGann. Capaldi ducked out of the audition because he didn't think he would get it. Capaldi has, of course, played three distinct and different characters within the Doctor Who universe, but had he been cast as the Eighth Doctor this wouldnt have mattered. A new series could have been commissioned, following a new continuity, and the rest, as they say, would have been history. Capaldis Eighth Doctor likely would have only starred in a movie, like McGann. McGann is generally regarded as one of the best incarnations of the Doctor, so his portrayal isnt the problem. Its the movie itself which failed to capture the public's hearts.
