Well, sort of. There is a certain solid scientific background to Orphan Black, believe it or not, and most of that know how comes from the namesake for Clone Club's own resident brainbox: Cosima Herter, a PhD student in the History of Science, Technology, and Medicine Program at the University of Minnesota. The real life Cosima is the shows consulting expert on everything genetics, science, and cool clone stuff. Not so much dreadlocks. Herter apparently notices inaccuracies in science fiction all the time, which is part of the reason she agreed to work on the show. Plus she's a long-time friend of co-creator Graeme Manson, which probably helps, and since then has been a regular staple of the writer's room at the beginning of each season. She describes her role as a resource for the biology...I study the history and the philosophy of biology, so I do offer some suggestions and some creative ideas, but also help correct some of the misconceptions about science. I offer different angles and alternatives to look at the way biological science is represented, so (its) not reduced to your stereotypical tropes about evolutionary biology and cloning.
