There's something really cool too that happens in Mrs S's house that Jordan and I have talked about, Tatiana Maslany has said of filming Orphan Black. It feels like coming home. The set is next to Felix's loft and Alison's rehab place, but it feels like home for some reason. Something in the air. The scenes are lit a certain way and Kira's there and there's just something different about it. Comforting. Another reason Mrs S might seem familiar is because the character has a basis in reality: actress Maria Doyle Kennedy was told that the writers based Sarah Manning's adoptive mother off of Patti Smith, the radical punk singer/songwriter best known for her version of Bruce Springsteen's Because The Night, and she altered her performance accordingly. Which probably wasn't all that difficult for her, because along with starring in shows like Oprhan Black, Downton Abbey and Dexter, Doyle Kennedy is also a singer-songwriter herself, who played her first gig in Canada whilst filming the series. Whilst her biography Just Kids doesn't involve a section where Patti Smith raised a bunch of potentially cloned orphan children she smuggled over from the UK.
