20 Mind-Blowing Facts About It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia

9. The Show Has Been Threatened With Cancellation

Considering the marginal humour of the show and the relative obscurity of FX as a network in 2005 (when the series premiered) it may hardly come as a surprise to find out that It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia has been threatened with cancellation before. The show struggled in its first season and the big 'C' word was banded around. Rob McElhenney told the Hollywood Reporter that:
We knew that no one was watching the show, and the network said that we needed to bring in someone with cachet to draw attention. They didn't really have the marketing budget at the time to blanket the airwaves.
So with nobody watching and FX unable to advertise, McElhenney and co. went about seducing a name star to appear in a featured role.
