20 Mind-Blowing Facts You Didn't Know About South Park
7. They Had A Plan For The Election Episode If McCain Won
Thanks to the show being produced so quickly, South Park episodes are often so timely that they reflect events that literally just occurred. That was the case with About Last Night, an episode all about Obama winning the election that aired less than 24 hours after election night. It even includes actual quotes from Obama's speech.
There was a rumor for a while that two versions were made depending on who won, but actually, only one was produced, and Parker and Stone were just really hoping they were right in their prediction. Matt Stone explained, "There was a really stressful fifteen minutes there where we thought, 'Oh man, what if we're wrong?'"
They did actually have a plan for that, though. If McCain won the election and their story didn't make sense anymore, they wouldn't have time to redo the entire thing, and so they considered just recording a drunken commentary over the episode, Mystery Science Theater style, and airing it like that. As entertaining as About Last Night was, that honestly sounds even more hilarious than what they actually broadcast.
