20 Mind-Blowing Facts You Never Knew About Futurama

9. That Sounds Like... Star Trek

Fox

All the references to likes of Star Trek are par for the course in an episode of Futurama, but some elements that started off as audio homages have become so integral to the show you probably don't even realise they're not original.

There's obvious ones, like the lightsaber batons using the official saber sound, although even in their umpteenth appearance they're still basically a joke. But when you hear the whoosh of a sliding door or a passing car you're actually hearing a sound effect that's decades old. Both Star Trek and The Jetsons, among others, were mined for their sounds, which became instrumental in making a rounded world.

So next time animation fans moan that Rosie's cameo in Bender's Game is the only nod to The Jetsons, you can tell them they should listen harder.
