While the writers would throw mysteries out there just to be cool, they didn't seem as flippant with the characters. Foreshadowing their eventual roles and succinctly summing up their personal ticks, most of the character's names tie into the themes of the show, referencing famous theologians and scientists.

John Locke was an influential figure in the Age Of Enlightenment (a period where science and faith went up against each other) who was patronized by Anthony Cooper, so the writers made Cooper their Lockes father.
