20 Mind-Blowing Facts You Never Knew About True Detective

7. Rust Drinks Because It Makes Everything He Says Inadmissible In Court

One of the first things to catch the attention in season one of True Detective is how different the Rustin Cohle of 1995 is from the Rust of 2012. Whereas the younger man was quiet, contemplative and dedicated to his job, the 2012 appears wiry, nervy and paranoid, and one of the most noticeably sad things about the older version of the guy is that he starts drinking at midday, interrupting his being interviewed by Papania and Gilbough in search of a Lone Star sixer. It makes sense, considering we learn of Rust€™s problems with alcohol within minutes of watching the very first episode - here it appears he€™s simply gotten older, given into his demons and become a functioning alcoholic. At least that€™s what you might think, until you realise that Cohle drinking during his interview, from then on, makes every word he speaks to the two detectives secretly on his case inadmissible in court. It€™s a sign that the old, calculating Rustin Cohle is still alive, and still way ahead of everybody else.
