20. A Real Case May Have Inspired It
While True Detective is a work of fiction heavily inspired by literature (in particular the cosmic horror genre), an interview with creator-writer Nic Pizzolatto suggested a historic satanic sex abuse case may have been a partial catalyst. When asked about the shows setting in the 1990s - a time when a satanism panic was in the news - Pizzolatto mentioned the case of Louisianas Hosanna Church. Echoing the show, Hosanna Church in Tangipahoa Parish was, in the early 2000s, a once-thriving congregation that supported schools for children, but that was revealed later to be a front for satanic rituals and child abuse. As a series of arrests of those involved began in 2005, police revealed, rituals within pentagrams involving cats' blood and people dressed in black robes.
