Whilst David Lynch eventually helmed the episode himself and just as well, because his direct contributions always made for the best instalments the producers of Twin Peaks originally had someone very different in line for the second season's premiere. Yes, none other than ET and Jaws director Steven Spielberg was approached to help begin to wrap up Laura Palmer's murder and her father's realisation at what he had done. Because a double-denim demon made him. Whilst Spielberg has always been one for the white picket fences side of Americana explored in Twin Peaks, he's never been all that interested in peeking beneath the surface in the same way as Lynch so his approach might have been interesting and unique, or boring and safe. Or you wouldn't have been able to tell it was him, as is the case with most guest star directors on TV, since they have a set style to fit to. How did this collaboration come around in the first place, anyway? Well, apparently a number of the show's staff were friends with Spielberg's wife (and Temple Of Doom star) Kate Capshaw, he came in, and insisted they make it as weird as possible, itll be so much fun. Alas.
