20 Netflix Original Series You Must Binge-Watch In 2019

7. The Central Park Five

The Central Park Five case was one of the most publicised and controversial cases of the 1980s, resulting in the conviction of five teenagers for the rape of a jogger in 1989, only to be exonerated in 2004.

It's a tale of both injustice and racism, with a relevant spin not only with regards to the incarceration of young black men, but also the involvement of Donald Trump, who was a prominent figure in calling for their imprisonment.

Ava DuVernay did a stunning job of tackling a similar theme with her Netflix docu-film 13th, and there's a wealth of material across the decades (the defendants eventually sued the city of New York, and settled in 2014) that should make for a compelling multi-part series in a similar vein to something like The People v O.J. Simpson.

NCTJ-qualified journalist. Most definitely not a racing driver. Drink too much tea; eat too much peanut butter; watch too much TV. Sadly only the latter paying off so far. A mix of wise-old man in a young man's body with a child-like wonder about him and a great otherworldly sensibility.
