20 Most Paused TV Moments Of The Decade

5. Rita Is Trinity's Final Victim (Dexter - Season 4, Episode 12)

The Moment: After finally murdering the Trinity Killer (John Lithgow), Dexter returns home to find that his wife Rita (Julie Benz) has become the final victim of Trinity, left dead in a pool of her own blood in the bathtub, while their son Harrison sits helplessly in the blood, reflecting Dexter's own childhood trauma. Why It Had To Be Paused: Because up to this point, it was easily the show's most shocking moment, and given how ridiculous and unconvincing the later plot twists in the show's history got, this was the big one that really worked. It completely changed the tone of the show and helped develop Dexter's character into something more interesting and unrestrained, which after four seasons, it absolutely needed in order to keep going. Seeing Dex's lovely wife put to death in such a violent fashion wasn't easy to stomach, but it was easily the series' dramatic high-point.
