20 Most Paused TV Moments Of The Decade

4. Gus Loses Face (Breaking Bad - Season 4, Episode 13)

The Moment: When drug lord Gus Fring (Giancarlo Esposito) visits Hector Salamanca (Mark Margolis) in order to assassinate him for apparently squealing to the DEA, he falls directly into Walter White's (Bryan Cranston) trap. Walter and Hector hatched a plan earlier to get rid of Fring forever more, attaching a bomb to Hector's wheelchair, which after a lot of ding-dinging, finally goes off. Following the detonation, Gus emerges from the room, apparently unscathed, though as the camera pans around to the right side of Fring's face, it's revealed that he's horribly disfigured, with half his skull exposed. He calmly adjusts his tie and then collapses to the floor, finally dead. Why It Had To Be Paused: Because it's one of the most brilliantly grotesque, darkly comic moments in TV history. At first, audiences are led to believe that Gus has, like a Terminator, somehow survived the explosion and will continue to terrorise Walt forever more, until the shot reaches Gus and the truth is revealed. It's easily one of the best visual effects shots in the history of TV, and unsurprisingly, took several months to organise due to its technical complexity. Still, the final results were worth it: it gave one of TV's finest, most terrifying villains a fantastic send-off worthy of his reputation.
