20 Things You Didn't Know About Friends

14. Ross€™ Second Marriage Could Have Worked

While Helen Baxendale€™s Emily may have romanced, married and then divorced Ross over 14 episodes at the end of season 4 and beginning of season 5, things could have gone a completely different way. For one thing, it might not have been Baxendale at all. Originally, Patsy Kensit was offered the role. Kensit, a former child star, teen pop star and rock star wife most famous as Mel Gibson€™s murdered love interest in Lethal Weapon 2, turned down the part, and the next stop along the way was Helen Baxendale. The initial plans for the relationship called for the pair to be together significantly longer: after all, Ross and Emily fell in love and got married. However, Baxendale lived in London, and having just become pregnant with her first child, was not prepared to commit to filming in the USA much longer than she did. Ross and Emily€™s whirlwind romance, marriage and divorce could have been a much more sedate affair. Interestingly, it might not even have happened. At first, David Schwimmer was opposed to the idea of Ross getting married again at all, claiming that he would have been too gun shy after his disappointment with Carol and would never have risked the heartache.
