20 Things You Didn't Know About Gilmore Girls
3. There Was No Ad-Lib Allowed Whilst Filming
The wise-cracking, sharp dialogue of Gilmore Girls became a signature part of the show. The scripts were much longer than any other television show but had to be spoken at such a fast pace so that it would fit into the usual 40-45 minute time frame of a typical television episode. The actors were never allowed to ad-lib or improvise because it would run overtime. And sometimes, because of all the loaded pop culture references, they didn't even know what they were saying.
The fast-talking speech was tricky for many of the cast members so George Bell, a vocal coach, was hired to make sure they were all speaking swiftly enough. In fact, he worked so hard on the show to help achieve the famous fast talk that he ended up being cast as Professor Bell when Rory first started college.
It certainly makes sense that the show’s tagline was “Life’s short. Talk fast”.
