3. It Was Originally Set In Los Angeles
Though the city of Philadelphia is so utterly a part of the show's personality, that wasn't always the case.
Rob McElhenney and co. actually pitched it to networks as set in Los Angeles and revolving around hustling actors trying to make it in Hollywood.
Ultimately FX told them that, due to the sheer number of sitcoms focused on aspiring actors at the time, that element of the story needed to change.
And so, in addition to ditching the actor angle, McElhenney decided to shift the location from Los Angeles to his native Philly. As for why he settled on a bar? In his own words:
"That's a job where you can have lots of free time and still have income that could explain how these people can sustain themselves."
