The fourth season's final episode, "The Nightman Cometh," debuted Charlie's demented rock opera of the same name, which became an immediate sensation with fans.

In September 2009, the cast decided to adapt the opera into a live show, and though Live Nation initially offered them a 30-city tour, the gang ultimately decided on six stops: New York City, Boston, Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Philadelphia.

In addition to the main cast, Mary Elizabeth Ellis and Artemis Pebdani also reprised their roles of The Waitress and Artemis respectively, while Danny DeVito's wife Rhea Perlman filled in as pianist Gladys.

Two new songs were added for the live show along with improvised elements, and the performance also included a screening of an unaired episode from the upcoming fifth season.

Better still, a filming of the Los Angeles performance was included as a DVD extra on the season four box-set.
