13. Dee Was Originally Going To Be The "Straight Man"
Believe it or not, when the character of Dee was being conceived in the show's early days, she was going to be a "straight man" to the gang's nihilistic activities, a dissenting voice of reason whenever they hatched one of their schemes.
In her successful audition, Kaitlin Olson actually read lines written for Dennis, and she was greatly disappointed when Rob McElhenney informed her Dee would be a straight character because he felt he didn't know how to write women.
This almost caused Olson to turn down the part, but she was able to convince McElhenney and co. to simply write Dee as though she were a man, and so the more vulgar, over-the-top Dee was born.
