The major conflict in The Good Place came from Eleanor (Kristen Bell), Chidi (William Jackson Harper), Tahani (Jameela Jamil) and Jason (Manny Jacinto) escaping the evil clutches of the crooked afterlife system and finally finding their way to the real Good Place.

In the season four finale, Whenever You're Ready, they finally achieve this, only once there they find that eternal happiness cannot really exist, because part of the joy we take in things comes from knowing it will have to end.

In order to combat this, Eleanor and Michael (Ted Danson) set up a system in which people can be permanently erased from existence once they've achieved inner peace in the Good Place.

The rest of the episode follows the gang as they live their afterlives together, happy, free of troubles, in love and out of harm's way. Eventually, they each find their inner peace, and allow themselves to be erased, having achieved all they can with the time they've given themselves.

It's a beautifully haunting, life-affirming finale, raw and deeply philosophical, and it gives Ted Danson the opportunity to utter yet another all-time great closing line that sums up the series flawlessly. Spotless finales don't come any better than this.

Aidan Whatman hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
