8. Tiswas
The above stands for 'Today is Saturday, Watch and Smile', it was broadcasted from 1974-1982 and featured Chris Tarrant as one of the major presenters. Produced by regional TV company ATV - Tiswas was shown on all the main ITV regional franchises except Channel Television. It featured a young Lenny Henry, Bob Carolgees and his dog Spit and Jim Davidson popped up occasionally too. The programme was a mishmash of pop videos, film clips and competitions linked together by the crew - their ad libbing and sketches. One of the characters was the Phantom Flan Flinger, who would just randomly show up and fling flans at people. Much more engaging and anarchic than the BBC's rival Multi Coloured Swap Shop, Tiswas could be as entertaining to adults as it was for children. In fact it was probably more entertaining to adults because they were old enough to get the satirical nature of the sketches and gags. But nevertheless, if you ask a certain generation about TV when they were a kid, Tiswas will have been a crucial part of their Saturday Morning viewing experience.
