20 Vintage Kids TV Shows From The Golden Age

12. Pingu

pingu Pingu is a stop motion British-Swiss collaboration which initially aired in 1986. The producers stopped making Pingu in 1996 but because it is such a little gem of a show, it has been repeated incessantly. Set in Antarctica, Pingu revolves around the lives of penguins working and living in their igloos. Pingu is a naughty, headstrong little male Penguin who frequently does mischievous stuff involving his best friend - Robby the Seal or his little sister Pinga. The show has been popular internationally, mainly because Pingu doesn't feature a language - he speaks gibberish so his adventures can be admired all over the world. Without being didactic, Pingu teaches children a lot of social messages. The animation is incredible, and even adults can appreciate Pingu as it is never preachy or boring. Schnoot! Schnoot!

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
