It was inevitable that Nina Myers' luck was going to catch up to her eventually, and it happened in delicious fashion half-way through season three. Nina is captured and taken back to CTU for interrogation, where she ends up forcing the interrogation needle to slash one of her arteries, and after she's taken to the CTU clinic, she promptly waits for the doctors to bandage her up before killing them and attempting to flee. However, she runs into Kim, who holds Nina at gunpoint for killing her mother. A stand-off ensues, and just as the more assured Nina is about to shoot Kim, Jack fires a bullet into her shoulder. Despite being down for the count, Nina tries to cut another deal while reaching for her gun, to which Bauer replies, "You don't have anymore useful information, do you, Nina?". Nina pathetically whimpers, "I do", before Jack utters the bada** retort, "No, you don't" and blasts Nina to death. Easily one of the most satisfying character deaths in the entire series, this was sweet, cold vengeance.
16. Jack Kills Chappelle (Season 3, Episode 18)
Ryan Chappelle had a lot in common with George Mason during his tenure throughout the show: he was another bureaucrat who never got his hands dirty, and just seemed to get in the way of what Jack Bauer and co. were doing. Chappelle began to redeem himself mid-way through season three during the Chandler Plaza Hotel incident, where a large number of the hotel's guests were infected with a virus released by Stephen Saunders, and were going to die painful deaths within hours. Michelle Dessler asked Tony to send suicide pills over to the hotel to ease the victims' pain, but was caught by Chappelle, who made it clear to Tony that doing so was against the rules, though in a rather surprising moment, agreed that the pills should be delivered to the hotel. Smartly, this was the writers making Chappelle a little more likeable before they killed him off, so that we actually cared... And oh, we did. Stephen Saunders made a savage request that, due to him getting too close to the answers CTU were after, Jack would have to execute Chappelle to avoid any more of the Cordilla virus being released. The two go to a trainyard to do the deed, and most viewers no doubt expected Chase Edmunds' raid to save Chappelle's hide at the last minute. However, the raid was a failure, and so Jack is forced to go through with it, delivering the gut-punch of a final line, "I'm sorry we let you down, Ryan. God forgive me", before blasting him through the head. This resulted in the third silent clock in the show's history, and is widely regarded as one of the 24's most shocking moments. That the writers managed to make us feel sorry for Chappelle without it seemingly emotionally manipulative was a masterstroke indeed.
