24: Jack Bauer's 10 Most Badass Moments So Far

2. Jack Needs A Hacksaw (Day 2)

Los Angeles is preparing itself for an imminent nuclear attack and the only lead they have is to an anti-government militia group led by Joseph Wald. Jack, who is still dealing with the death of his wife, is brought back to CTU at the request of President David Palmer because he has history with Wald. We learn that Wald is currently on parole and there is one witness who can put him away for life, Marshall Goren. Jack asks for him to be brought in. We learn Goren is a really unsavoury character with charges of kidnapping a minor, child pornography and first degree murder, and is being granted immunity so long as he testifies against Wald. After Goren smugly boasts about his deal, Jack shoots him in the chest in front of his boss George Mason, who goes absolutely berserk. Jack just calmly says: €œI€™m gonna need a hacksaw.€ Those words would send a chill down anyone€™s spine if Jack Bauer whispered it into your ear. It is a shocking moment, one we did not see coming that once again brings up a question that 24 has debated time and time again; is one man€™s life worth more than a thousand? In this case, the means justify the ends and this barbaric act is the first step in a mile to secure the nuclear bomb. He brings Goren€™s head to Wald€™s crew as a peace offering and the act is enough to re-establish his cover. €œJack€™s back,€ his old €˜friend€™ says, patting him on the back. Boy, they had no idea.
