After seven seasons, it wasn't Wayne Unser's long battle with cancer that took his life but Jax Teller. The ex-Chief of Police had been a strong ally to the club since day one, often seeing the brighter side of their presence in Charming and understanding many of the club's members more than most of the other law enforcement that came and went throughout the series. Despite often being walked on and taken advantage of by the club as the series went on, becoming disillusioned with them as the level of violence increased and having puppy love for a woman he knew was poison, Unser continued to help the club out long after he had retired, though knew well enough what this world was like to want to help Tara make a better future for her and the boys. In the final season, Unser's feelings for Gemma may have blinded him from putting the obvious pieces together and seeing the truth about Tara's murder, but his growing frustration with Jax, his perpetual abuse from the club despite all he'd done for them and ultimately his desire to do the right thing by arresting Gemma instead of letting Jax kill her cost him his life. Unser stood up to Jax, attempting to prevent him from doing the very thing that would push Jax completely over the edge, For fans of the character, his declaration that "This is all I got left" was a heartbreaking final line, adding yet another dead body to the pile Gemma's lies had built.
