25 Facts You Didn't Know About Doctor Who

3. Sophie Aldred's Near Miss

During the making of the 1989 story Battlefield, Sophie Aldred (Ace) came incredibly close to suffering what many believe could have been a fatal accident on set. The scene involved Aldred being in a water tank, which cracked in the middle of a take; mildly cutting her hands and causing water to leak out onto the studio floor towards the studio€™s electrical equipment. Sylvester McCoy noticed the crack and alerted the crew, leading to Aldred being quickly removed from the tank and the studio being evacuated. Although floor manager Gary Downie has maintained that only the floor crew were at risk, it remains a common belief amongst some cast, crew, and fans that Aldred could have been killed if McCoy had not intervened.

2. Absence Of The Daleks

In 2005, it was uncertain whether or not Terry Nation€™s estate would license the use of the Daleks in the Doctor Who revival, allegedly because they were furious at the inclusion of a Dalek in the background of a scene in the 2003 film Looney Tunes: Back In Action at the request of Steve Martin without their authorisation. Though other accounts list the reason as the Nation estate deciding that the BBC had licensed them out too much. Had the BBC been denied use of the Daleks, the Series 1 episode Dalek would have instead featured the Toclafane, monsters first seen in 2007's The Sound Of Drums. Which at that point were referred to as "Future Humans" but had the majority of the Toclafane's personality traits such as their child-like demeanour and the sadistic joy they gained from killing. While it was being written, the episode was jokingly titled "Absence Of The Daleks".
