25 Greatest Characters Across The Entire Whedonverse

14. Fred

Fred - AngelAppeared in: Angel Winifred Burkle, while not gay, was sort of the Tara of the Angel world, albeit with a very different back story - and she didn't stay an outsider for long. Found as a slave in Pylea, where humans were treated like livestock (in the second season), Fred was simply a super sweet girl who became the wholesome heart of the group. Oh, and she happened to be a super brainy physicist. Played by Amy Acker, who has also appeared on Whedon's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Fred added a much-needed second female lead to the Angel cast, The sweet southern girl was full of charm and stole our hearts, right up til her tragic end. Not every new character works, no matter how good the show or the writers behind it. The fact that Fred not only worked but became such a key component of the show despite not really being full time til the third season is a tribute to how good the character really is.
