25 Greatest Characters Across The Entire Whedonverse

13. Xander

Appeared in: Buffy the Vampire Slayer The heart of the Scoobies, and the heart of the super slayer. Alexander Harris was the "regular" guy on Buffy. What's so great about the regular guy? Well, his heart. He sees all the horror around him, sees what his friends are going through, and keeps right on fighting. He's a lovable loser, and he never has any real super powers (aside from a brief period where he magically becomes a soldier, and maintains some of the military knowledge after the spell has worn off) yet manages to still be a crucial part of several storylines. Initially a love interest for Willow, their union is not to be (no kidding), and though he pines for Buffy, he doesn't get her either - yet he is always there for them as a good friend should be. Xander rarely gets the credit he deserves on the show - as one of the three key Scoobies (Buffy, Willow and Xander), he was the lone male voice outside of the grown-up Giles (Angel and Spike were never really Scoobies, and both were much older than the show's core), and often the voice most grounded in reality. Even during his Anya days (a fantastic character as well), his ex-demon fiancée to be, Xander seemed like just a simple, flawed yet admirable guy - a standout in the world around him.
