25 Greatest Sci-Fi TV Shows Of All Time

1. Buffy The Vampire Slayer

The X Files
Mutant Enemy

It's hard to put into words just how extraordinary Buffy The Vampire Slayer was, but allow this writer to try. A sci-fi series centered on a teenager in a high school environment, it could have fallen victim to an endless array of tropes - as many of its modern day counterparts usually tend to - but instead, it subverted those norms and became an incredibly clever, compelling and, at times, frightening tale.

18 year old Buffy Summers' reluctance to take up her mantle as her generation's chosen vampire slayer ends up leading her to the center to evil itself - Sunnydale, CA (a.k.a. The Hellmouth) - and, in the process gives her the best army any supernatural hunter could ever ask for.

A witty, charming and thoroughly enjoyable show - capped off by some of the strongest writing for a female character any medium has ever seen and a show-stealing leading performance from Sarah Michelle Gellar - Buffy The Vampire Slayer is a classic example of how sci-fi can lend itself nicely to other genres while maintaining all of the necessary qualities to produce a story that is every bit as funny as it is terrifying. And that (alongside oh-so-many other qualities) led this timeless series to legendary status in a very short amount of time.
